“Studying Philosophy was one of the single best decisions I made to develop both my business acumen and IT-related skills.”
— Esaias Burnette
Thank you for taking the time to click on this post and read what I have to share. I am truly grateful for your time, and I do not take it for granted.
It is only fair, that if you are willing to take your valuable time to listen to my thoughts, you should know on what basis these thoughts are coming from.
Who is Esaias Burnette, and what does he have to offer to this vast space called Technology and Business? This post endeavors to answer this question.
I tell people this all the time. In August of 2015, I graduated from college, and in September of that same year, I registered my business. The name of it was KADE Distributions; it was a partnership between myself and two other members.
I have always had an entrepreneurial spirit and sought to provide products and services to help meet the needs of my customers. From 2015 to 2017, we had a food vending business. Mind you, I am no chef, but by leveraging the skillset of others around me, we had an unstoppable powerhouse team.
We negotiated our way into the largest Call Center on the island, serving 600 employees daily with food and beverages. We started with one stall, a single grill and a few tables. Within a year we doubled our stalls, grills, and tables. We also worked with businesses to provide other food products to our clients at that Call Center.
In those two years, I truly learned business, many things that were just theories from college became real and practical to me. I became a businessperson and developed a business mindset. Though I thought we were unstoppable, in September of 2017, I found out that the only unstoppable force is nature.
On September 18th, 2017, my county experienced an unstoppable force called a category 5 hurricane. It devastated every inch of my country and in the wake, only debris, brokenness, and the feeling of complete hopelessness remained.
The business was still a baby and could not withstand such devastation. We closed the business and decided to charter our paths individually. While in college, I did an Associate Degree in Economics (Hons) and Computer Science, so I had a great foundation in IT and business as a whole.
From then on, I decided to do two things, work in IT and study to be a businessperson. I got a job in 2018 as an Assistant IT Technician and I furthered my business education through a Philosophy degree. Yes, a philosophy degree.
Studying Philosophy was one of the single best decisions I made to develop both my business acumen and IT-related skills. More information will be given in the post What I Learned from a BA in Philosophy.
While working as an Assistant IT technician, I learned about computer networks, connections, hardware, system administration, business applications, cabling, data centers, Wi-Fi access points, IP phones, switches, routers, UPSs, IP cameras, firewalls, and the list can go on. The point is, I learned a lot!
About a year later, I was promoted to Lead IT Technician. I developed my team leadership, communication, analytical, and management skills as well as a host of other soft skills.
I also joined toastmasters and achieved the Advanced Communicator and Advance leader awards during that time (This was during the old Toastmasters program structure).
Two years later, I became the Technical Project Manager and I now manage complex projects spanning from IT-related solutions to renewable energy. I have both depth and breadth, both very hands-on and quite capable of seeing the bigger picture. I have always been fascinated with technology, not just for the tech but how it can make and improve the life of a business.
This brings me to my newfound passion and the amazing potential that it has. In August of 2021, I passed my AZ-900 Azure Fundamentals exam and started to delve deep into cloud computing.
I’ve learned a lot and continue to learn, so I find it only fitting now to take the information that I have gathered over the past seven years, both in business and technology, and share it with those who would care to listen.
Maybe the things I share will help you advance your career. You may learn about new technology and decide if you wish to implement it in your business or not. Also, you may gain a better understanding of some emerging technology. Whatever the case, the things I’ve learned I will share. I am Esaias Burnette.
